RivelinCo is a neighbourhood arts centre ‘without walls’, proudly based in the suburb of Hillsborough in Sheffield, South Yorkshire. We create and curate extraordinary creative projects and events in unexpected places, always made for and with our community, and we lead creative workshops that bring together people of all ages and walks of life to learn new skills.
‘Without Walls’ means we are not tied to a single building. Instead, we transform local parks, supermarkets, community centres, high streets, schools, and care homes into theatres, galleries, workshops, classrooms and forums. RivelinCo invites local people to create alongside and in collaboration with professional artists and makers of all disciplines, and deliver dynamic artist-led and citizen-led projects that couldn’t exist anywhere else.
RivelinCo aims to harness the transformative power in ‘keeping it local’. We aim to provide affordable and accessible activities for people of all ages and from all walks of life. We work out of a formerly empty shop front on Hillsborough High Street, and advocate for community ownership. We support vital services for vulnerable people and work in collaboration with several local partners including Age UK Sheffield, Andy’s Man Club, Winn Gardens estate and the S6 Food Bank. We do our best to think global and act local. We aim for our work to be radically inclusive, caring, intergenerational and sustainable.
We believe access to culture is a human right: that celebrating, mourning, laughing, making, dancing, crying, listening and telling stories together is vital to building a fairer society. We also strive for care and kindness, and prioritise these values above all.
The concept was been developed in collaboration with, and with support from, numerous artists, community groups, businesses, arts industry professionals, and local people. We now employ a core staff team of 5 (including me), a roster of 10 Casual Arts Support Workers, and work with lots of freelance artists and facilitators, both local and from further afield.
